First Look: Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii (Update)

September 20, 2024 was an important day for those who follow the Like A Dragon (formerly known as Yakuza) franchise, as Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio held the pre-Tokyo Game Show edition of their RGG Summit livestream event with the surprise announcement of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

Known under its full title, Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, it is a game that RGG Studio teased at an event before the RGG Summit, reassuring fans that they would be in for a surprise. And they were right: Pirate Yakuza in Haiwaii features a fan favorite character that has been sought by fans to see a game of his very own, Goro Majima.

The story of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii takes places half a year following the events of the eighth and recently released Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, where the Mad Dog of Shimano, Goro Majima, finds himself washed ashore on an Hawaiian island, waking up to not remembering his name. He encounters a young boy named Noah and eventually takes up the role of captain of a pirate ship—outfit and all, having been qualified for a very long time with an eye patch in tow.

Features of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii includes all of the perks of previous Yakuza/Like A Dragon games, including fan favorite Karaoke, the Dragon Kart mini game from Yakuza: Like A Dragon, and a low-key announced cabaret mini-game, as seen in the Side Activities trailer. Lastly, Majima will be playable with two fighting styles, Mad Dog and Sea Dog, where the latter transforms Majima into a pirate; additionally, the player will be able to make Majima jump, where it was not possible in previous games.

Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will be the second game in the series of “Gaiden” games, the first being The Man Who Erased His Name released in November 2023 and focused on long-time main character, Kazuma Kiryu, following the events of the seventh game, Yakuza: Like A Dragon released in 2020.

Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will be released February 21, 2025 on currently available Playstation and Xbox platforms, as well as on Steam on the PC. Check out the trailers below! Let us know what you think!
