I don’t talk about many K-Dramas on Centaku Media, but there is one in particular that caught my interest as of late, in part due to the swirling controversy surrounding the nature of the following show that we’re highlighting coming up soon in October, called Love in the Big City. This K-Drama, however, is different from your traditional K-Drama, as the subject matter involves the subject of Boys Love—or “BL” for short.

The Taiwanese drama It Started with a Kiss premiered on the CTA network, airing between September 25th, 2005 – February 12th, 2006. It is also based on a popular Japanese manga that received an anime adaptation in 2008, Itazura na Kiss. We take a brief look at the drama and what we’re in for in this 20 episode live-action adaptation.
If you’ve never seen a Japanese drama, then let me say there are often 3 key elements to each series: brevity, “trendiness”, and melodrama. 1) Each series is usually 10 or 12 episodes max, unless incredibly popular in which case a follow-up movie will be made, or special as it’s called. Only rarely does a show, even a popular show, get a second full season. This means most series are essentially like American/British mini-series, and are more serial than episodic. 2) The brevity of these shows plays into component 2, which is J-Drama’s “trendiness” or perhaps a better word would be relevance to their audience.

The past decade has been dominated by many K-Pop acts–PSY, to BIGBANG, to BLACKPINK, to BTS. Elsewhere, in Japan, the idol industry has been dominated by Japan’s largest girl group, AKB48. They have had more than a dozen songs sitting on top of Japan’s Oricon charts in the several years since their debut. However, their popularity has dipped in the past few years. In this post, a non-AKB48 fan talks about another non-AKB48 fan covering a video that chronicles their rise to fame.
