Preview: Love in the Big City (K-Drama)

I don’t talk about many K-Dramas on Centaku Media, but there is one in particular that caught my interest as of late, in part due to the swirling controversy surrounding the nature of the following show that we’re highlighting coming up soon in October, called Love in the Big City. This K-Drama, however, is different from your traditional K-Drama, as the subject matter involves the subject of Boys Love—or “BL” for short.

The upcoming K-Drama, Love in the Big City, stars Jin Ho Eun and Nam Yoon Su. The story involves Go Young (Yoon Su), a gay Korean man who lives with his roommate Mi Ae, a straight woman. Mi Ae (Lee Soo Kyung) witnesses the struggles of Go Young’s life as he has relationship issues with his mother, as well as his boyfriend Gyu Ho (Ho Eun), due to the social issues surrounding of his sexual orientation. Following his breakup with Gyu Ho, Go Young takes a trip to Thailand with a stranger to give him another view of himself and the life around him.

Love in the Big City is based on a novel by Park Sang Young, with the TV drama helmed by multiple directors for each episode; Heo Jin Ho, Hong Ji Young, Son Tae Kyeom, and Kim Se In. Actors Jin Ho Eun was featured in All of Us Are Dead, where Nam Yoon Su appeared in Extracurricular, both of which can be seen on Netflix.

The drama is highly anticipated for many reasons, one of which being a LGBTQ+ focused drama that has been a welcoming trend in the past few years in a conservative country such as South Korea. TVING was the original broadcaster of the drama; unfortunately, the airing of the drama will be limited due to protests from anti-LGBTQ+ individuals. However, wherever it will air, it is poised to receive positive support to encourage more LGBTQ+ dramas in the future.

Love in the Big City will air on Rakuten’s Viki streaming platform outside of Korea and is slated to air on October 21, 2024. Check out the trailer below.
